Occasionally we take a moment out of our day for some fun. Jonathan was particularly inspired by this chicken yesterday evening. You’ll also notice in the photos that it’s time to turn over some beds at the farm for fall greens. It’s remarkable how much the field continues to change with new plantings going in, even well into August. This week we seeded our first Fall spinach, lettuce mix, kales, mustard greens, and radish. Hakurei turnips will be added to future plantings through September.
We’ll have lots of tomatoes this week at markets, and I included a photo of Tomato City to the gallery above to give you an idea of the way we grow our plants. Lots of trellising is involved as the plants grow up to be much taller than we are by late summer and need support. We leave wide paths in between for good air flow, and plant red clover in those paths as a built-in cover crop within our intensive (a.k.a jam-packed) growing operation.
We’ll be at the West End market in Hartford today (4-7pm) with:
Tomatoes! (Cherries, Heirlooms, & Slicers)
Green & Orange Sweet Peppers
Japanese & Italian Eggplant
Summer Squash & Zucchini
Mustard Greens Mix
